Asbestos scare at Illinois state house

A construction accident at the Illinois state house resulted in a day-long evacuation for asbestos testing, according to the State Journal-Register.

An asbestos abatement project is underway to prepare for next year's renovations in the western quadrant of the building, which is located above Senate offices. During the process, portions of the Senate offices' ceiling had collapsed, leaving plaster on the floor, said the news source.

"It appears someone working above on asbestos abatement may have inadvertently stepped on a junction box," a spokesman for Senate Republicans told the news source.

While the construction company working on the project did not see a cause for concern, they ordered air quality testing to ensure safety and sent workers home.

It is important to take precautionary measures when dealing with potential asbestos contamination, as exposure to the hazardous substance can result in a number of severe respiratory diseases, including pleural mesothelioma.

If workers are exposed to asbestos, the mineral can become attached to lung walls upon inhalation. Mesothelioma can appear decades after this exposure and attack the membrane of the lungs and other internal organs.
