Mesothelioma & Asbestos Deaths in New York
Asbestos exposure essentially means being put in a position to inhale the tiny fibers that asbestos gives off when it is being disturbed or when it deteriorates. It can lead to a number of health problems, most of them respiratory. The two most serious afflictions are asbestosis, a scarring of the lungs caused by asbestos fibers. It leads to permanent reduction of lung capacity and is not curable. The lethal result of asbestos exposure is mesothelioma, a form of cancer that attacks the outer lining of the lungs, of the abdominal cavity and of the heart.
Mesothelioma symptoms often do not appear for twenty years or more after the asbestos exposure. A study done of asbestos-related deaths from 1979 to 2000 showed that in New York, 750 deaths were attributed to asbestosis during that period. The death total from a mesothelioma diagnosis was at least 1,912 and the real figure may have been twice that due to misdiagnosis of the cause of death.
The federal government began tracking mesothelioma deaths in 1999 due to the enormity of the health problems associated with asbestos in this country. From 1999 through 2004, 893 deaths attributed to mesothelioma were recorded. Clearly the disease has not yet peaked, even though asbestos products have been off the market, for the most part, since the mid 1980s.

To some degree, it can be said that the modern asbestos industry was born in New York State. A young man named Johns founded a company to produce asbestos products in the mid-19th century. His manufacturing company developed asbestos roofing, insulation and textiles. Later, his Johns Manufacturing Co. would build a headquarters in Manville New Jersey – hence the modern name, Johns Manville.
The fact that Mr. Johns introduced asbestos insulation to many nineteenth century builders (and buildings) is simply emblematic of the degree to which New York State is strewn with businesses that got their start prior to 1975 and so, used asbestos in its many industrial incarnations without concern. The railroads that crisscross New York and that still provide a major service to New York commuters all had shops laden with asbestos insulation and components. The shipyards of New York, the early factories and foundries that used heat in their processing, all used asbestos to insulate hot pipes and other factory equipment.
Bethlehem Steel, all of the major auto manufacturers, General Electric, Rochester’s own Eastman Kodak – these are samplings of companies that built factories in New York when asbestos was a major industrial asset. Of particular note is the Zonolite exfoliating plant in Brutus, NY. Zonolite was the trade name for insulation made from vermiculite shipped from a mine in Libby Montana owned by W.R. Grace. Vermiculite is a mineral that, when exposed to extreme heat, morphs into a material that is ideal for insulation. The vermiculite from Libby contained asbestos. Manufacturing the insulation contaminated workers, and those who installed the finished product were exposed as well.
Zonolite no doubt played a role in the construction of some of the buildings listed below. But many of them used asbestos from other sources to meet their needs. New York is full of power plants and refineries, both prime industrial locations for asbestos exposure. The list below is one compiled from sources that detail locations where asbestos exposure may have occurred for employees.
Many of these plants are now closed or renamed, but the asbestos problem hasn’t changed unless it’s been removed. Mesothelioma & Asbestos Deaths in New York
Asbestos exposure essentially means being put in a position to inhale the tiny fibers that asbestos gives off when it is being disturbed or when it deteriorates. It can lead to a number of health problems, most of them respiratory. The two most serious afflictions are asbestosis, a scarring of the lungs caused by asbestos fibers. It leads to permanent reduction of lung capacity and is not curable. The lethal result of asbestos exposure is mesothelioma, a form of cancer that attacks the outer lining of the lungs, of the abdominal cavity and of the heart.
Mesothelioma symptoms often do not appear for twenty years or more after the asbestos exposure. A study done of asbestos-related deaths from 1979 to 2000 showed that in New York, 750 deaths were attributed to asbestosis during that period. The death total from a mesothelioma diagnosis was at least 1,912 and the real figure may have been twice that due to misdiagnosis of the cause of death.
The federal government began tracking mesothelioma deaths in 1999 due to the enormity of the health problems associated with asbestos in this country. From 1999 through 2004, 893 deaths attributed to mesothelioma were recorded. Clearly the disease has not yet peaked, even though asbestos products have been off the market, for the most part, since the mid 1980s.
