A Michigan man has been sentenced to 13 months in jail because his demolition firm failed to take the proper precautions when dealing with asbestos.
Multiple Asbestos Violations

The U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids, Michigan, sent Scott H. Tucker to prison for two separate instances of asbestos violations, according to the Toldeo Blade.

One of the incidents took place in South Toledo, Ohio, when Tucker’s firm, H&M Demolition Company, tore down the former Haughton Elevator building. The firm failed to wet down asbestos pipe insulation before it was removed and they also did not inform the city of the project. Both of these were violations of the Clean Air Act.

The second incident involved similar asbestos violations on a demolition project in Wyoming, Michigan.
Asbestos Clean Air Act Violations

The Clean Air Act was enacted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1990 to improve the country’s air quality. It is often used to enforce asbestos violations as inhalation of the mineral in its dust form can cause a range of deadly diseases such as malignant mesothelioma and asbestosis.

In addition to his jail time, Tucker was fined $1,000 and ordered to serve three years of supervised release after he gets out of prison.
