Man sues 14 companies for asbestos exposure

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

A former refinery worker is suing 14 companies for allegedly exposing him to asbestos and causing severe health problems.

Richard G. Richard, Sr., claims that these companies failed to test products for asbestos contamination and also to provide him with information and protection in the event of exposure, according to the Southeast Texas Record.

According to the October lawsuit, Richard's wife Delores reported the loss of her "husband's care, maintenance, services, support, advice, counsel and consortium," as well as suffering mental anaguish.

Richard alleges that the negligence of the defendents, including Chevron USA, Cleaver Brooks, Met Life, Vogt Power International and Zurn Industries lead to his development of a malignant disease.

Exposure to asbestos can result in the rare but deadly cancer, mesothelioma. Its symptoms may not arise for up to several decades after exposure, which is why Richard is filing the suit in 2010 for his exposure between the 1950s and '70s.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 107,000 people around the world die every year due to asbestos-related diseases.
