Massachusetts man pleads not guilty to asbestos-related charges

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

A Massachusetts man is facing charges of violating the Clean Air Act while overseeing a demolition project in West Boylston.

The Worcester Telegram reports that H. Bradford White, general manager of West Boylston Municipal Light Plant, was arraigned this week and pleaded not guilty to three counts of violating air pollution orders in 2006.

White allegedly neglected to warn employees of the existence of asbestos on the work site, enforce a state-required asbestos management plan and legally dispose of the asbestos-ridden materials, according to the news source.

The Department of Environmental Protection ordered for additional air quality testing to be performed on the site in 2009, which led to new asbestos findings. The Telegram reports that White did not comply with the proper disposal procedures that MassDEP outlined for him.

Making sure that a demolition site is safe is a matter of life and death for construction workers. If they are exposed to asbestos, the substance has the potential to cause serious diseases like mesothelioma, which is a rare and often fatal cancer.
