Naval Station Ingleside is on the north shore of Corpus Christi Bay, at the ship channel linking the Port of Corpus Christi to the Gulf of Mexico. Established in 1988, NAVSTA Ingleside has more than 2,500 military and civilians on site supporting mine warfare ships and mine countermeasures squadrons.

Asbestos in Older Ships

As is the case for most naval stations and shipyards, many large vessels have their homeport at or are being serviced at Naval Station Ingleside. Since most Navy ships built before the 1980s have asbestos-containing parts, working on or near such vessels may have exposed people to toxic levels of this carcinogenic mineral.

In Many Components of Vessels

Asbestos was (and continues to be) used in many parts aboard nearly all types of sea-going vessels, including in:

* Boiler and engine rooms
* Submarines
* Fire rooms
* Gaskets, valves, turbines
* Plumbing and electrical insulation

Asbestos in Years Past

Although today there is increased awareness about the toxicity of asbestos — plus more stringent safety regulations concerning asbestos work — in years gone by, many people who worked at naval stations or shipyards were exposed to dangerous levels of this mineral. They were not aware that they may have been inhaling fibers of asbestos on the job.

When an asbestos-containing product is “friable,” that is, when it is crumbly because of its age or its deteriorated condition, the fibers of asbestos may be released into the air. Asbestos fibers can also be released simply when the product is being installed or removed.

Asbestos fibers, when inhaled, may cause diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma.
