Georgia is one of the states with substantial locations where asbestos occurs naturally. The areas of the state where the southern end of the Appalachians runs through have a number of asbestos deposits. There are other areas of the state as well: Georgia has seventeen former asbestos mines according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Most of those have been closed for a long time; more relevant to the issue of hazardous asbestos exposure in Georgia is the number and type of industries that have taken root in the state.

Atlanta has always been a commercial center in the South. It was established as a railhead, a natural place to connect the state’s export producers (like cotton plantation owners) with the coastal ports. Today, Atlanta is the fastest growing major metropolis in the country. While the city maintains its prominence as a financial center, it’s important to look at the industrial sites around the state that may have caused employees to be exposed to asbestos fibers.

Those asbestos fibers can cause scarring of the lung tissue leading to the sometimes fatal affliction of asbestosis. They are also responsible for malignant mesothelioma, a lethal cancer that usually attacks the pleural, or lung area; or the abdominal cavity (peritoneal mesothelioma). It takes up to twenty years or more after the asbestos exposure for mesothelioma symptoms develop.
Georgia Asbestos Jobsites

Below is a list of Georgia jobsites that are likely candidates for hazardous asbestos exposure for employees of years past. There are paper mills, textile plants and military installations. Also likely candidates are the steam powered electric generation plants; up until about 1985 wherever an industrial process required heat there was going to be asbestos covered pipes and tanks; asbestos gaskets and even asbestos protective gear for employees.

Mesothelioma & Asbestos Related Deaths in Georgia

An analysis of American death statistics released in 2004 looked at the issue of asbestos as a fatal toxin. The researchers used death statistics along with demographic analysis and a look at industrial links to possible asbestos-related deaths. For the state of Georgia the study concluded that about 240 asbestosis deaths occurred between 1979 and 2001. There were mesothelioma deaths in the range of 319 to 527. It was not until 1999 that the federal government began tracking mesothelioma deaths specifically. The number of those fatalities reported for the period of 1999 through 2004 is 219. It’s clear that the confirmed deaths over the five year period is a likely increase over the two decades preceding.
