Naval Station Pascagoula is located in Mississippi, on the man-made Singing River Island at the mouth of the Pascagoula River (now called the Singing River). It was established by the U.S. Navy as a strategic homeport on the Gulf Coast, and it became operational in 1992 as a homeport for guided missile frigates.
The Naval Station was 187 acres lying south of Ingalls Shipyard. In 2005, there were about 2,000 active military personnel, 200 civilian employees, and thousands more family members, reservists, and retirees. In 2006, after just 14 years of service, Naval Station Pascagoula (NAVSTA Pascagoula) was closed.
Proximity to Asbestos
Because of the nature of ship repair and shipbuilding in the immediate area, it is possible that people who served in the military or worked at NAVSTA Pascagoula were exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos, a mineral used in many ship components. The fire-retardant and friction-resistant properties of asbestos have made it useful in ship and machinery parts such as:
* Gaskets
* Pumps
* Turbines
* Brake lining
* Pipe insulation
* Electrical insulation
* Drywall
* Boiler room components
* Submarine components
Asbestos Causes Mesothelioma
When asbestos material is manipulated, whether as part of its installation or repair, its tiny fibers may be released into the air, where they can hang suspended for hours or days. These fibers are not visible to the naked eye, and they may be inhaled by individuals in the area without their knowledge.
Asbestos fibers can lodge themselves inside the human body, in tissues that are then disrupted by the presence of these foreign materials. Asbestos is known to cause lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma, a fatal cancer of the tissue lining of the chest cavity.
