According to reports, the discovery of asbestos at the Matagorda County Jail has put construction on hold.

Officials found asbestos in several parts of the county jail, which is located in Bay City, MI.

Asbestos Revealed

When officials tested the facility for harmful substances, tests for asbestos returned positive.

Asbestos was allegedly found in the glue being used for the floor tiling and some of the plumbing pipes.

After the discovery, Bass Construction thought it was too risky to continue working on the project, so they shut down the demolition of the building.

“I never would have dreamed something built in 1982 would have asbestos problems,” explains commission, George Deshotels.

Permit Needed for Demolition to Continue

The company is now waiting to receive a permit before they can legally remove the asbestos from the jail.

Although the asbestos removal has become an added expense in the construction of the jail, Deshotels says that it can still fit into the initial budget.

Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that is often used in thermal insulation and can be fatal if inhaled or ingested over an extended period of time.

“Continued exposure can increase the amount of fibers that remain in the lung, which can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma,” explains the Environmental Protection Agency.
